University of North Carolina at Wilmington - Center for Marine Science Research Pier
The UNCW Center for Marine Science is dedicated to providing an environment that fosters a multidisciplinary approach to questions in basic marine research. University officials say "the mission of the center is to promote basic and applied research in the fields of oceanography, coastal and wetland studies, marine biomedical / environmental physiology and marine biotechnology / aquaculture."
The hub of the center is located off Masonboro Loop Road and opened in 1997. In addition to the main building, Rod Andrew, P.E. designed the 500 foot pier in 1998. It is home to the CMS research vessels, including a 33' Catamaran SEAHAWK and the 70' RV CAPE FEAR.
