neal andrew, P.E.During his undergraduate years, Mr. Andrew studied civil engineering with a concentration in structures and he was a University Foundation Scholar and Honor Roll Student. As an Undergraduate Research Assistant, he mixed and tested a wide variety of high performance concrete for the Strategic Highway Research Project.

While attending graduate school, Mr. Andrew worked for an engineering firm where his responsibilities included the analysis and design of industrial structures utilizing concrete, steel and timber. He was involved in the retrofit design of a 600,000 sq. ft. General Motors Plant and several large Anheuser-Busch facilities.

Mr. Andrew joined Wiss, Janney, Elstner, an engineering firm nationally recognized for forensic engineering and expert witness testimony after graduate school as a project engineer. He was involved with several projects concerning structural analysis and repair of existing structures. This included finite element modeling of members in a pre-cast concrete parking deck at Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta, GA, and on-site observation and documentation of structural steel repairs to the Atlanta Olympic Stadium. He also contributed to structural peer review projects, most notably the Atlanta Olympic Tennis Stadium. In addition, he has participated as a project engineer on the failure analysis of a parking deck in West Virginia.

In 1997, Mr. Andrew joined Andrew & Kuske, a firm created by his father in 1982. His projects included analyses of existing industrial structures for revised loading conditions, design of new timber marine piers and wharves, analysis and design of an existing concrete building for an additional floor, investigation and repair design for an existing masonry retaining wall, floodproofing of existing buildings, and design of marine bulkheads. He has also served as the project manager on projects involving the use of structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, pre-engineered metal, light gage steel, heavy timber and wood, fiberglass, and stainless steel for both new construction and repairs to existing buildings. These projects encompass industrial, commercial, governmental, and residential construction types.

His notable projects include the Bath House and Guest Pavilion at Hammocks Beach State Park; St. Mark’s Catholic Church Education Center, Progress Point CVS offices in Wilmington; the repairs to the Bridge Tender restaurant and the Hanover Seaside Club expansion at Wrightsville Beach and the Wagoner Hall kitchen floor repair at UNCW. He is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Concrete Institute and certified by the Structural Engineering Certification Board. Mr. Andrew has served on several committees for the North Carolina State Building Code Council including the Wind Load Ad Hoc Committee for Residences and the International Building Code Structural Committee. He also currently serves on the New Hanover County Commissioners Inspection Department Advisory Council.
